Working Steering

Ok; I figured I'd share this neat treat with you guys. It's fairly simple and takes a bit of patience but it well worth it in the end.

Pick your subject. Mine is the 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 with poseable wheels. I always get an extra in case I mess up.

I got the steering bits off the sprues cleaned them up and semi assembled them. Then figure out where I needed to cut the connecting rod. Cut it towards the driver side and use the steering rod as a guide. I made a "slip sleeve" with a tab (I used a piece of sprue and number tab) and drill through the centre of the sprue to slide over the two pieces of connecting rod so they rejoin in the middle. I then glued the connecting rod sections into the slip sleeve making sure they met in the middle.

I then drilled a hole in the tab where the steering rod will go through.

Then I assembled the suspension loosely with tape so it could be disassembled easily. I then "Z" bent the steering rod so it'll turn the wheels when the wheel is turned.

Then figured out where it would pass through the firewall and interior tub (if applicable).

I drilled through the centre of the steering wheel so it would slip onto the steering rod.

And there you have it. Turnable Steering.
